The August 2002 Self Healing by Dr. A. Weil contains an overview entitled "Healing Hepatitis C with Natural Approaches." Weil recommends that his suggestions may be used instead of or in conjunction with drug treatment. They are:
Lead a healthy lifestyle.....
1) avoid alcohol and tobacco... 2) avoid drugs that are harmful to the liver (avoid all unnecessary drugs)... 3) avoid exposure to toxic chemicals (gasoline, solvents, pesticides, herbicides)... 4) stay active (walking, yoga, tia chi)... 5) get enough rest... 6) consider sweat bathing (elimination of toxins)... 7) be vaccinated against hepatitis A & B
Diet.....
1) eat a low-protein, low fat diet (increase beans, soy, salmon, flax, walnuts & cook with olive oil)... 2) increase fiber intake (fruits vegetables, whole grains)... 3) eat foods that may aid liver detoxification (brocolli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale)... 4) drink adequate water (8 glasses daily)... 5) sip green tea (source of antioxidant compounds; 2 to 4 cups daily in addition to your 8 glasses of water)
Supplement intelligently.....
1) take antioxidants. (Vitamin E may improve response to interferon; Weil recommends: 200 mg Vit C, 400-800 I.U. of natural Vit E or 80 mg tocopherols and tocotrienols, 200 mg selenium, 25,000 IU mixed carotenes + B-complex supplement)
Try Chinese medicine.....
1) Weil makes reference to the long history of Chinese medicine in treating chronic diseases. He suggests contacting Qingcai Zhang in New York www.dr-zhang.com and reading Healing Hepatitis C with Modern Chinese Medicine. Book and herbs available from 888-788-4372 www.hepapro.com
Use mind-body approaches.....
1) stress suppresses immune function and worsens liver inflammation... 2) do a daily practice of breath work, yoga, meditation and/or yoga... 3) seek social support from family, friends and/or a support group... 4) try to maintain positive attitude.
In separated text, Weil suggests 3 helpful herbs .....1) milk thistle 175 - 200 mg 3 x daily @ 70-80% silymarin ... 2) schizandra ... 3) olive leaf (formula to be standardized for oleuropein)
