...Toshiba announced their April 2002 launch of an electrochemical DNA chip to aid in determining the best treatment for HCV patients. It's based on research that correlated the therapeutic effect of interferon with the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of host genes.
...In parts of Pakistan, rates of HCV infection are approx. 29% in those 20 years of age or older and approx. 3.2% if less than 20 years old. The high rates of infection are likely due to the 1964-82 smallpox eradication program.
...Using mice, researchers have found that genetically altered amino acids can block the formation of excess scar tissue.
...Durable response can be achieved in liver cancer patients using TheraSphere, microscopic glass beads that deliver radiation to tumors.

From the Jan/Feb 2002 Hep C Connections:
...Email Buddy Program: "...Sometimes going to support groups is hard or even impossible, but sharing with people who have similar disease issues...is really important. If you are interested in an e-mail buddy or group e-mail system, contact... banecks@mymailstation.com".
...In a study entitled "He Told Me I Would Die and That I Should Just Go Away", 278 randomly selected HCV patients described difficulties relating to primary care providers. 47% reported a "communications breakdown" characterized by a negative attitude on the part of the doctor toward the patient, lack of understanding about the patient's feelings and lack of sensitivity about social issues associated with HCV diagnosis. 33% reported that their doctor lacked information or was incompetent regarding HCV. 11% reported feeling openly stigmatized by their physician.
